Local Interest:

Situated at the rear of the park is a nature reserve Pease Dean which has many relaxing walks, these walks lead up the glen passing over the small river and through the trees.

Coldingham is close by, as is St Abbs, which, many would say is Scotland's capital for scuba diving. Back on dry land again, Eyemouth is one of the most popular towns with a flourishing vibrant harbour full of activity and characters alike.

Pease Dean

Wildlife Reserve is woodland rich in wildlife and history. The reserve consists of 32 hectares of mixed woodland on the slopes of the Tower and Pease Dean. It was established in 1989 when the Scottish Wildlife Trust purchased the land from the Forestry Commission.

History

The reserve has a long history as a woodland. Robert the Bruce was said to have cut timber here and during the siege of Berwick in 1318 and the site site once provided wood for the monks of Coldingham Priory. There is a fortified tower dating from the 15th century at the top of Pease Dean

Wildlife

The best areas of the reserve for wildlife have a mix of ash, oak and hazel with alders along the burnside. Beneath these trees, dogs mercury, an indicator of ancient woodland, is abundant and in early summer the air is thick with garlic scent of ramsons. Primroses, bluebells and red champion add their colour to this thick layer of wild flowers.

Great spotted woodpeckers, treecreepers, dippers and parties of long-tailed tits are regularly seen and marsh tits breed here, close to the northern limit of there range in the UK. In the summer, willow warblers, blackcaps and whitethroats fly in from their southern wintering areas to join the resident tits and thrushes and fill the the woodland with song, Roe deer and red squirrels are sometimes seen on the reserve.
